EDUCATION COMMITTEE PROGRAMS

The following briefly describes programs available to be presented by the Education Committee of the Stonington Historical Society.

Northeastern Indians

Age: Grade 3, but can adapt to any age.
Where: At host school.
Description: How Indians lived before the colonists arrived: food, clothing, housing, hunting, trade. Tools, furs, other hands-on examples.

Colonial life in early Stonington, emphasis on children

Age: Grade 3, but can adapt to any age.
Where: At host school.
Description: Life here in area: food, clothing, housing, farming, religion. Two students are dressed in period attire (boy & girl); examples of cookware, food, lighting, etc. for hands-on examples.

Sea Chest (New Program)

Age: Grade 4, but can adapt to any age.
Where: At host school or at Palmer House.
Description: The Sea Chest contains articles a sailor would have taken to sea during the period 1820 to 1850. Items for both work and personal use are displayed and discussed. Includes examples of scrimshaw for hands-on. The program was developed to help students better understand the life seamen experienced during the sealing and whaling expeditions.

Lighthouse Tour

Age: Any grade.
Where In Stonington Borough.
Description: On the grounds, and inside, docents describe various displays of life in Stonington: from early settlers on; also whaling, ice industry, lighthouses on LI sound, early implements, railroads & steamers, Wadawanuck Hotel, children's room.

Palmer House

Age: Any grade, will fit presentation to age
Where: In the Palmer House.
Description: Home of Nathaniel B. Palmer, discoverer of Antarctica. Docents lead tour of home built in 1852. Tours cover 2 floors decorated in the Victorian Period, plus an Antarctica room with displays on NBP. We will tailor the program to fit your needs.

If you are interested in participating in any of these programs, or have questions about them, please call the Education Committee Chairman, Mrs. Scotty Breed at 860-599-0187. There is no charge for these programs for Stonington schools.
