  • Description Celebrating more than 20 years of stewardship, the Stonington Historical Society announces the opening of a new exhibit, Picturing Pine Point: Depictions of the Captain Nathaniel Brown Palmer House, 1851 to the Present. This exhibit will feature historic and contemporary sketches, paintings, photos, and ephemera of the Society’s 165-year-old National Historic Landmark property. Included will be artifacts uncovered during renovations to the home; architectural remnants; pictures taken by inhabitants over years and sketches made both pre and post construction; and intimate family photos. Home to sibling seamen, Nathaniel and Alexander Palmer, their families and descendants, the 1852 Greco-Italianate house was known as Pine Point until its acquisition by The Stonington Historical Society in 1995. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1996, it is now known as the Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer house in recognition of the national importance of his discovery of Antarctica in 1820. The exhibit will open on Saturday February 25th with a reception from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. The exhibit will remain open to the public and free of charge on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. during the month of March. Beth Moore, museum curator of the Captain Palmer House, will be on hand to illustrate the fascinating history of this local treasure and the significance of its place in history. The Stonington Historical Society was founded in 1895 and our mission is to preserve, interpret, and celebrate the history of Stonington. Our properties include the Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer House, the Old Lighthouse Museum, and the Richard W. Woolworth Library. Please Join Us!
