We’re Hiring: Visitor Services & Volunteer Manager

The Visitor Services and Volunteer Manager is responsible for managing the visitor experience at the Stonington Historical Society (SHS) and for overseeing the SHS volunteer program, including recruitment and training. This is a year-round, part-time position with hours that vary seasonally, ranging from 16 hours per week to 32 hours per week, including weekend and holiday hours in season and occasional evening and weekend hours throughout the year. The Society operates two seasonal sites – the Captain Nathaniel Palmer House (built in 1852) and the Lighthouse Museum (built in 1840), and presents a regular program of walking tours. This person will recruit and train seasonal staff, scheduling and supervising them, while also filling shifts as needed. The VS&VM is also responsible for coordinating Society volunteers, overseeing group visits to SHS sites and assisting with facility rentals. The position is able to help with planning thematic tours and programs, and with generating content for Society print materials and social media accounts. Qualifications include: experience providing top-notch customer service; visitor services and retail sales experience; energy and enthusiasm; experience with public speaking; ability to self-motivate and take the initiative; ability to prioritize competing tasks; proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Google docs and Square point of sale; and a knowledge of American history. Hourly rate: $15 to $20 per hour, commensurate with experience. Submit cover letter and resume to director@stoningtonhistory.org.
