Old Saint Michael Cemetery Walking Tour
October 20, 2019 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
The Irish Presence Project of the Stonington Historical Society will conduct a walking tour of the gravesites of Civil War veterans in the Old Saint Michael Cemetery on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m. The resting place of the early Irish immigrants who founded Saint Michael Parish, the cemetery contains approximately 60 graves of Civil War veterans, nearly all Irish, including the unmarked grave of one Confederate soldier, John T. Shea. The tour, which will mark the first event in celebration of the re-opening of Saint Michael Church, will include remarks by local historian Larry O’Keefe, co-chair of the Irish Presence Project.
Mr. O’Keefe will provide background on the soldiers, including the units to which they were assigned, where they fought and how they died. He will also speak about the tombstones, carved from Westerly granite, that mark the soldier’s graves. Old Saint Michael Cemetery was established in the 1850s, pre-dating the construction of Saint Michael Church, which was dedicated in 1861.
Please wear flat shoes and convene directly behind the church. A rain date, if needed, is set for the following Sunday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m.
