Irish immigrants came to Stonington working on the railroad, in shipping and in quarries.
New in 2018, the Irish Presence Committee was formed to explore the Irish experience in Stonington. Below, watch a section of Chris Kepple’s interview with Larry O’Keefe on the Pawcatuck Neighborhood called Downerville. This segment of the interview looks at some of Larry’s personal memories of growing up there.
This small Irish and Italian neighborhood was known for being a close knit community with strong ties to St. Michael Catholic Church and School.
